DECLAN MCCRAITH WOOD TURNER
I was an immediate fan of Declan’s beautifully handcrafted bowls. So it was a great pleasure to work with him and learn more about his craft. Using windfall wood and mostly natives species, he captures the honest beauty of this precious raw material.
Declan approached me initially to design business cards and signage. He wanted to develop a unique calling card for his work. So I began to learn more about his process and his customers. It became clear that each piece of Declan’s work has a specific story to tell. Beyond its initial aesthetic beauty, each handcrafted item is grounded in a place and history. This unique proposition would be my starting point for the brand.
THE PROCESS
I found that the natural grain of the wood and particularly the patterns found in spalted beech echoed the contour lines on a map. So this idea developed into my key visual element. Talking with Declan about his work, he discussed his interest in woodcuts and the arts and crafts movement. It felt fitting to work with typefaces with an arts and crafts feel. The burnt orange colour I use compliments the wood tones while also adding a pop of colour.
